The tale of the 3 Jakes and the Whitetails

The first 3 pictures shown here are from last evening. These 3 jakes were out picking through the freshly plowed cornfield. For those who may not know, a jake is a young male wild turkey. I have been seeing turkey out just about every evening the past couple of weeks. Sometimes a flock of them, or sometimes just 1 all alone out feeding, both in the morning and evening.

The rest of these I took tonight while outside enjoying the nice weather. It actually smelled like spring too. Hopefully the cold weather is almost gone now. The trees are starting to bloom, although the frost we had the past few mornings may have stunted them a bit.

While the three turkey were pecking along in the cornfield, out came a group of nine whitetails. Pretty awesome seeing them out together eating.

In this last picture you can see the other 3 deer off to the right hand side.

There were also 2 deer out on top of the hill that I couldn’t get a shot of. After a few minutes, something ended up spooking all 11 deer and they ran off into the woods. About a half an hour later I saw around 7 others up on the hill where the other 2 were out, I assume that these were the ones from down by the turkey and they just made their way up the hill through the woods.

If you enjoy the wildlife photos, you can view more in my “farm” album on my Pennsylvania Backwoods Photo Gallery
Enjoy!

Wow, looks like you’re in a great place to see wildlife there. I especially like the turkey and deer all dining together.

Yeah Kristine, I love it here. I only moved here 4 years ago tho. I grew up in the city, but this is where I should have grown up.

Thanks for stopping by, and sorry I don’t get over to your blog as much as I should, just a million things goin on right now and with warm weather here, that just means more work.

Hey Brian - very cool gathering going on there. looks like you live in the perfect place for a game camera or two.

Oh very cool! We don’t have wild turkeys here in Nova Scotia (that I know of) but back in Ontario I’d spot them once in awhile.
And 11 deer together! That would be something! We have a group of 5 that we see often. Luckily they are always on the other side of the lake where I can enjoy watching them, but they won’t eat my flower gardens :-)

Thanks for commenting Lisa. Yeah, it used to be here the were “herds” of 30-40, but now 11 together is something. We have a salt block not too far away from the vegetable garden has been the last few years and surprisingly the deer have done little damage.(maybe like 2 plants eaten)
